Transcription is more than what we think we hear, and we remind our transcriptionists regularly, “Is what was said, what was heard, what was transcribed?” Potentially they could be three different things if our transcriptionists and authenticators are not careful and diligent in the work they are doing on a daily basis. It could be like the Operator game we played in a circle of friends in kindergarten.
Transcription is about active listening. Transcription is about understanding the spoken word. Transcription is the diligent studying of client style guides. Transcription is understanding all the detailed requirements within said style guides. Transcription is a balance of speed and accuracy to make sure that the words that are said are captured as close to accurate as possible. But, it’s also so much more than words. It’s about grammar, punctuation, spelling, research skills around superfluous facts, and the ability to make sure the understanding of any accents or subject matter is understood by the transcriptionist.

It’s not about transcribing words; it’s about actively listening, understanding nuances, and adhering to intricate style guides.
