Timecodes in a transcript indicate where written text matches a specific time in an audio or video file, allowing for precise referencing. They can be thought of as bookmarks within your transcript. The use of timecodes can increase overall efficiency and workflow, and drastically save time and money. Timecodes are typically inserted throughout the transcript or aligned in the left margin. Transcripts can be stamped every few minutes, every few seconds or with every speaker change. Ultimately, they are based on customer requirements. Historically, we find that the majority of our clients prefer a timecode inserted at 1-minute intervals within the transcript. There is no additional surcharge for inserting timecodes, and we find that 1-minute timecodes usually do not increase the cost of the transcript. Timecodes are a normal part of our process though not utilized by all of our clients, and we bill for the time it takes to complete a project. Clients such as a television production company or documentary filmmaker will insert a greater frequency of timecoding to be able to more efficiently edit their video footage as desired.
