It’s important to think about how you would like your transcripts formatted. Are you looking for a transcript that captures every word spoken and/or utterance, or are you looking for a transcript that “cleans up” the speech by removing false starts and stutters? Options for transcription formatting include true verbatim, intelligent verbatim, and modified verbatim. True verbatim formatting captures every word, stutter, and false start. Intelligent verbatim formatting captures the original intent of the speaker while removing the nuances of human speech. This type of formatting typically requires very light editing. Modified verbatim formatting removes filler words, false starts, and stutters, while keeping the main message of the speaker’s words. Other things to think about when deciding how you would like your transcripts formatted are: font style, indentation style, timestamps, and speaker labels. ATC provides an in-house style guide that follows specific formatting guidelines in the event that you do not have one.
